Chairman's Chat May 2022

Hello Everyone,

Hopefully you are all keeping well and have been able to get your cars out during the recent good weather.

Sunday 8th May is our regular monthly meeting at The Fox Inn, Matching Tye, we meet around 3pm, but some members book themselves in earlier for lunch. Click on this link for contact details https://www.thefoxinn.com/

Parking is limited but there may be space at the village hall a short walk away. If the weather holds up we may be able to get on the field

Past Events

April 20th – Mid-month meal, Lobster Smack, Canvey Island. Unfortunately only six people attended this, our small band were treated to an excellent meal from a good menu. We were even treated to an Easter themed pub quiz. The pub is situated right on the shoreline of the Thames, it would have been good to have had more time for a stroll along the shoreline. Thanks to Mike & Heather Crowley for organising this.

April 24th – National Drive-It Day. This event was well attended with about twenty cars gathering at the Squadron, North Weald Airfield for breakfast, leaving slightly later than planned followed a detailed tulip route to Ridgewell Airfield Museum then returned to The Fox, Matching Tye for lunch. Despite a little printing gremlin everyone seemed to enjoy the day. The Ridgewell museum is dedicated to the servicemen who were based there during WWII. I cannot recommend this to highly and is well worth a visit, we will very likely return to have another visit. For any member who has not visited the Squadron restaurant lately, they have just undergone a change of ownership and a huge refurbishment and is well worth a visit.

April 30th – P&A Wood Rolls Royce specialist, This was my first visit here though the club has been several times. Fifteen members attended this world class specialist in both new and classic Rolls Royce & Bentley motor cars. A very knowledgeable guide took us through all the different workshops and showrooms which took approximately 2 hours. Many members then went for lunch at The Green Man at Lindsell. Unfortunately due to a car problem I was unable to join them so hopefully everyone had a good meal. There was no entry fee for this tour but members were asked to make a donation to P&A Wood’s charity

Partners who are The Stroke Association and The Samantha Dickinson Brain Tumour Trust. Thanks go to Tony Rudman who originally booked this and to Wendy Way for taking over. There is apparently now a two year waiting list.

2nd May – May day Fair, The Fox. This event was organised by the Fox and was a tremendous success. The club was asked to supply some cars to be displayed and provide transport for the May Queen and her Princesses. The response was very disappointing with only a few members who supported the Fox. Thanks to those members who supported this

and to Joe Wells who transported the Queen and Princesses in his Bentley. I am sure this made their experience even more memorable.

Events coming up

Wednesday 18th May 7:30pm – Mid Month Meal, Rubino’s Kitchen, Kelvedon Road, Inworth, Colchester CO5 9SP. We have previously been to this restaurant and were treated to an excellent meal. There are still some places available, please contact Gus Mckie if you would like to attend, g-mckie@hotmail.com.

May 28th/29th Sat./Sun (leaving Monday) Newmarket/Ely tour – Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa £465.00 for dinner, bed & breakfast in one of their king bedrooms. We will depart form The Fox and follow a detailed tulip route to the hotel or you can make your own way there. Rooms have been booked for this event but I might be able to get extra rooms if you would like to attend please contact Ian Robinson.

July 3rd Sunday – Annual Show and BBQ This will be a collaborative event with Matching Green Cricket Club and other local organisations, however we still need help from club members on Saturday 2nd to set up and for the show day. Please contact Gus McKie if you are able to assist in any way.

We need some ideas from the membership for a venue for the mid-month lunch scheduled for 20th July 2022, do you have a pub or restaurant near you that would be suitable for a visit, please contact a member of the committee. We have not received any ideas for this, we really need help from members to help to keep these events going.
